Maya Bond (Japanese: マヤ ボンド; born August 5, 2000 in Osaka, Japan) is a Japanese-born American indie and avant-garde music singer-songwriter and drummer from Austin, Texas. She is the daughter of musician and composer T.W. Bond.

Bond is most notable for her 2004 debut, Pink Drums, Purple Lights, which she is credited for writing all the song lyrics to.[1] Although Bond was never actually signed to Business Deal Records, she is still linked to their roster as an artist.[2] Her debut was released on Ellahy Amen Records in 2004, her official label.

Biography

Bond was born in Osaka, Japan in 2000 and is the daughter of musician and composer, T.W. Bond. Haggard and Halloo stated in their article that Bond's paternal grandmother was a runaway from a Cherokee reservation, which makes her one-quarter Cherokee.[3]

At the age of four, Bond released her first debut album in 2004 after being influenced by her father, who was in many bands during his career. In an interview Bond did for KEYE-TV, she stated she wanted to create an album after watching her father write and record music. Her debut was released in late 2004. Bond is now eight years old and is still performing, promoting her music, often fronting with older band members.[4]

Her father is currently a member of Count Dracula's Weed Smugglin' Jam Engine, a band signed to the Business Deal Records roster. However, he is also a composer, who once composed music for the Italian foreign film, Il Circo Cinese.[3] According to the Houston Press, her songs "showcase the wondrous mind of a four-year-old – one that is scatological and delightfully morbid."[5]

Ellahy Amen Records

In 2004, Bond was signed to Ellahy Amen Records, a fairly new independent avant-garde label created by avant-garde musician and former Pigface member Leila Bela. Bond launched a tour with Bela and was written about in Newsweek magazine alongside Smoosh, The Muldoons and the Tiny Masters of Today. In the article, Newsweek stated that Bond was already a favorite of Gorilla vs. Bear, a popular MP3 blog.[6]

"Cute Papa" was featured on Business Deal’s Top 40 of 2005 compilation, as well as Gorilla vs. Bear’s Best of 2005 mixtape.

In 2009, Bond's website and MySpace account were both taken down. Her record label, Ellahy Amen, left an official statement on the matter:

Maya Bond has ended her websites both homepage and myspace because she is no longer four years old and is way to cool for that stuff now lol. She has moved on to more grownup projects such as playing piano and hanging out with friends.
