"Pinus oocarpa" (Pino Amarillo, pino avellano) or (Mexican yellow pine, hazelnut pine) is a tree native to the New World. It appears that it was the progenitor (original) species that served as the ancestor for some of the other pines of Mexico.

From Chihuahua, Mexico, Guatemala and the highest elevations of Honduras, El Salvador and NW Nicaragua. At 900-2400 m above sea level. In El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua it grows above 1100 m. Its natural distribution goes from 29° to 14° northern latitude. It needs 15 to 24° C for a good development. Its rainfall needs are from 1000-1900 cm (46-70 in.). The variety "Pinus oocarpa" var. "trifoliata" grows between 2000 and 2400 m above sea level. It was introduced for commercial production of wood for the paper industry: in Ecuador, Kenya, Zambia, Colombia, Bolivia, Queensland (Australia), Brazil and South Africa.
