Established in 1992, The Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of cultural and racial tolerance and understanding through the exhibition of film, art and creative expression.[1]
PAFF's stated goal is to present and showcase the broad spectrum of Black creative works, particularly those that reinforce positive images and help to destroy negative stereotypes. PAFF has an ethos of using film and art to create a better understanding and foster communication between peoples of diverse cultures, races, and lifestyles. However, PAFF is coming under increasing criticism on issues of quality content and the inclusion of White filmmakers who are competing and taking the award intended to develop African filmmakers. Some argue that White filmmakers, who do not suffer from racism in mainstream societies and have more opportunities extended to them should not be allowed to compete in the limited film festivals set aside to redress imbalances faced by African filmmakers.[2]
