Deserto de Viana

The Deserto de Viana, Cape Verde, (in Cape Verdean Creole: D’zert’ d’ Viana) is a desert covering most of the northwestern portion of the island and it also covers the central portion, the only parts not affected by the desert is the shoreline, Sal Rei and the mountains to the northwest. The desert is almost entirely uninhabited except for the northern part which is around 100 covers approximately 20% to 35% of the island's area or surface and not a village is in the desert. The road linking Sal Rei and Norte crosses the southern half of the desert and is partially paved.

Geography and Information

Its length is approximately 15 km from north to south and approximately 10 km from east to west. The soil color is from tan to red and are filled with colorful rocks that almost images with its terrain of the planet Mars. The elevation is around 15 m to the north and around 50 m to the south. The desert also reaches to its hills to the west, Cabo de Santa Maria to the north, the mountains to the east and several to the south. Panoramic views of the island

Panorama

The desert offers a panoramic view of much of the island except for the northwestern and the southwestern parts as well as the eastern parts. The Atlantic Ocean can be seen to the desert's northern half.
