To the west it borders on the French region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (departments of Alpes-Maritimes, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes). To the north it borders on the province of Turin. To the east it borders on the province of Asti. To the south it borders on the Ligurian provinces of Savona and Imperia. It is also known as the Provincia Granda, the big province, because it is the third largest province in Italy (following the provinces of South Tyrol and Foggia). This has created problems in the past with the Alba's inhabitants, frustrated from the long trip to Cuneo every time they need to have business with the provincial government. The issue of dividing the province into two has been brought up several times. Briga Marittima and Tenda were part of this province before cession to France in 1947.
