Scagnello is a "comune" (municipality) in the Province of Cuneo in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 80 km southeast of Turin and about 35 km east of Cuneo. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 209 and an area of 9.0 km².All demographics and other statistics: Italian statistical institute Istat.]

Scagnello borders the following municipalities: Battifollo, Ceva, Lisio, Mombasiglio, and Monasterolo Casotto. It belongs to to the villages of Val Mongia.

Landscape / Nature:It is situated on the hillside. The agriculture cultivates large areas of Maroni / Castagne trees which sourround the village. From Scagnello a view into the Langhe is very beautiful.

History:At the municipal of Scagnello a book on the rich history of this village is available. Scagnello has been a cornerstone on the old salt route from Genova to Milano. Most of its richness was destroyed during the napoleonic phase of occupation and destruction. Only old ruins of castles document the prior power. Currently an old house still exists which has a catalogued fresco from the 15th century and is situated with a beautiful view into the sourrounding valleys.

Holidays / Vacations:In Scagnello it is possible to experience the traditional italian life of a small village. A simple hotel with a bar and restaurant exists, further accomodation is available in neighbouring municipalities. It is a perfect playground for children, opportunities to go just in the nature are many, long walking tours up to 2000 meters above sea levels are there, fishing is in the valley close by. Additionally Squad rental is not far away. Many things depend on own initiative - all exists, but it needs to be searched a little.

Sports:Good environment for track bike & mountain bike, jogging and cross country, but very hilly and sometimes steep.Close by there is also a winter ressort in Viola.

Celebrations:The villagers have diverse celebrations mainly on eastern,chrismas and carneval. Very amazing is the annual traditional dinner on year end where most villagers come together to celebrate. This event is always organized by a couple of young people from the village. Halloween is largely unknown.

Houses / Investment:Since over the past 80 years the population became less, there are opportunities to look for still affordable beautiful houses. A little renovation might be necessary, but it will be surely worthwhile.
Infrastructure:A car will do a good service for anyone. DSL is available. A shop for the daily need is there and fresh bread is produced at a family business down the road Via Torino. Most families have their own vegetable gardens. In the area very tasty honey is produced in small quantities. In Mombasiglio a supermarket (jolly market), a butcher, gas station, Pizzeria and Bar exists. Battifollo has a small bar with a nice terasse and children playground. Anything else should be purchased either in Ceva, Mondovi or in between.

Special Events:This August (2008) a run of the Maritime Alps Rallye in Offroad ( Class Suzuki, and higher with Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota) took place in Scagnello and neighbouring villages. A tough contest where 10 out of 30 cars did not arrive at all in the finish.

Integration:As foreigner it is important to integrate smoothly and and to contribute to the community by showing participation, heartfulness and voluntary work.
