• The transportation officials of 17 Asian nations meet in Busan and sign the Trans-Asian Railway Network Agreement that authorizes the construction of a trans-Asian railway. Cosigners of the agreement include, in alphabetical order, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, China, South Korea, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tajikstan, Thailand, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Twentyfour other nations also participated in the week-long conference.^[1][2][3]

• – 2006 Cape Town truck-train collision – 27 people are killed when a Metrorail train traveling at Faure near Somerset West, just outside Cape Town, South Africa, collides with a truck that had stalled on a barrierless level crossing. The truck, where all the fatalities were concentrated, was carrying at least thirty-three workers from a local vineyard.^[4]

• – 2006 West Bengal train disaster – A suspected terrorist explosion on a train travelling between New Jalpaiguri and Haldibari in a remote part of West Bengal State, India kills five people.

• – Arnhem rail crash – A cargo train collides into a passenger train in Arnhem, Netherlands, injuring 31

• – Canadian National Railway (CN) extends the employment contract of E. Hunter Harrison, the railway's current CEO, for one year setting the new contract expiration date as December 31, 2009. His term as CN's CEO began on January 1, 2003.^[5]
