Morgantown, West VirginiaAlma mater West Virginia University Charles "Chuck" Marstiller Vest (born September 9, 1941)[1] is a U.S. educator and engineer. He served as President of MIT from 1990 until December, 2004.[2] He was succeeded as President by Susan Hockfield. On February 6, 2004, he was appointed to the Iraq Intelligence Commission by President George W. Bush. He was later appointed president of the National Academy of Engineering.
Prior to his ascension to the MIT presidency, he served as the provost and professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan. He is a graduate of West Virginia University.
Cambridge University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Law in 2006. Harvard University has also given him an Honorary in 2005. In 2011, Tufts University awarded him an honorary degree in Doctor of Science. He gave the Tufts University Commencement address in 2011.
Vest is also a member of the USA Science and Engineering Festival's Advisory Board.[3]
