- Alpine orogeny
The Alpine orogeny (sometimes also called Alpide orogeny) is an orogenic phase in the
Tertiary that formed the mountain ranges of theAlpide belt . These mountains include (from west to east) the Atlas, thePyrenees , theAlps , theDinaric Alps , the Hellenides, theCarpathians , the Balkan, the Taurus, the Caucasus, theAlborz , the Zagros, theHindu Kush , the Pamir, theKarakoram , and theHimalayas . Sometimes other names occur to describe the formation of separate mountain ranges: for exampleCarpathean orogeny for the Carpathians,Hellenic orogeny for the Hellenides or the Himalayan orogeny for theHimalayas .It also led to the formation of more distant, but smaller geological features such as the
Weald-Artois Anticline in Southern England/Northern France (the remains of which can be seen in the chalk ridges of the North andSouth Downs in southern England). Its effects are particularly visible on theIsle of Wight (where theChalk Formation and overlyingEocene strata are folded to near-vertical, as seen in exposures atAlum Bay andWhitecliff Bay ) and on theDorset coast nearLulworth Cove .The Alpine orogeny occurred when the continents
Africa andIndia and the smallCimmerian plate collided (from the south) withEurasia in the north. Convergent movements between the tectonic plates (theIndian plate and theAfrican plate from the south, theEurasian plate from the north, and many smaller plates and microplates) began already in the earlyCretaceous , but the major phases of mountain building began in thePaleocene toEocene . Currently the process still continues in some of the Alpide mountain ranges.The Alpine orogeny is considered one of the three major phases of orogeny in Europe that define the geology of that continent. The three are:
*theCaledonian orogeny that formed theOld Red Sandstone continent when the continentsBaltica andLaurentia collided in the earlyPaleozoic .
*the Hercynian or Variscan orogeny that formedPangaea whenGondwana and the Old Red Sandstone continent collided in the middle to latePaleozoic .
