"Dance with My Father" is the title track from the 2003 Luther Vandross album Dance with My Father. It was written by Vandross and Richard Marx. The song reached number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 16, 2003, becoming Vandross' final Top 40 hit.

In February 2004, Vandross and Marx won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year for "Dance with My Father".

Inspiration

The song comes from the good times Vandross shared with his late father, Luther Vandross, Sr., when he was a child and they would dance with each other.

Chart performance

"Dance With My Father" was the last top 40 hit for the late Luther Vandross in his homeland, U.S., peaking at 38. The song also peaked at 21 in the UK. As of Saturday 29 August 2009 the song re-entered the top 40 after a performance of the song on the British hit TV show X Factor by Joe McElderry. The song entered the UK Singles Chart on the 20th December 2009 at number 48, just outside the Top 40.

Cover versions

In 2004, country music singer Kellie Coffey released a cover version which peaked at #41 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. It was included on her unreleased second studio album A Little More Me. Lyn Paul recorded the song for inclusion on her 2006 album Late Night.

In 2005, Celine Dion covered the song for the So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross album. It was also later included on her 2009 greatest hits album My Love: Ultimate Essential Collection.

In 2009, The X Factor winner Joe McElderry covered this song in his audition on the sixth series of the show. In the final, he sung the song again and was crowned winner. He sang the song at various gigs and eventually recorded the song in 2011 for his second studio album, Classic. This version premiered on Magic Radio on 7 August 2011. A stripped live performance was used as the music video for McElderry's version. The video premiered on Entertainment Focus on 13 September 2011.[6]

In 2010, Filipino R&B singer Jay R covered the song from his 5th studio album and 6th over-all album, Jay R Sings OPM Love Classics, a song was a bonus track from his same album.

American Idol season ten contestant Jacob Lusk performed the song during Music from the 21st Century week.
