- Point O' Woods, New York
Point O' Woods is a seasonal hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County,
New York , on Fire Island (technically known as The Great South Beach). To reach Point O' Woods in season, one must take a private ferry from the Bay Shore depot on Long Island.
As Fire Island’s oldest community which began as a
Chautauqua in the 19th Century, The Point O' Woods Association is completely self-contained – with a grocery store, kids’ day camps and sailing programs, a ferry line, tennis courts, playing fields, a candy store, and Fire Island’s only goods train track. Point O’ Woods’ communal though insular nature is underscored by a fence that borders Ocean Bay Park to the west; to the east there is the Sunken Forest National Park, with no other communities for miles. Point O' Woods, though small and private, has some of the most historic houses on Fire Island.Children are the primary focus of the community. Families seeking to join the community must have children, and the community's summer life is structured around the "camp" activities of sailing, sports, swimming and tennis provided to 5-12 year olds, and staffed by the community's teenagers.
