Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP is a law firm that was founded as Morgan & Lewis on March 10, 1873.

Morgan Lewis was founded in Philadelphia on March 10, 1873 by Charles Eldridge Morgan, Jr., a Civil War veteran, and Francis Draper Lewis, the son of a successful cotton merchant. In 1883, Morgan & Lewis hired Morris Rex Bockius, who dominated the firm from the turn of the century until his death in 1939. He became a partner fifteen years after he joined the firm, which became Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.[1]

In 1882, the firm began to handle work for the United Gas Improvement Company, which became the largest gas and electric utility company in the United States, and (as UGI) is still a client today. That was the beginning of a boom: By the end of the 19th century and into the 20th, Morgan Lewis counseled many leading companies including Philadelphia’s largest newspaper, Pennsylvania’s largest railroad, a major paper manufacturer, banks and trust companies, and the largest manufacturer of steam locomotives in the world.

The law firm was the original holder of the web domain name In September 2000 they made an agreement to transfer the domain name to Major League Baseball.

Today, Morgan Lewis is a global law firm with nearly 1,300 lawyers in 23 offices around the world.[1]

With 22 offices in the United States, Europe, and Asia, Morgan Lewis provides transactional, litigation, labor and employment, regulatory, and intellectual property legal services to clients of all sizes across all major industries.

Morgan Lewis has one of the highest concentrations of East Coast lawyers of any one firm—including more than 700 lawyers combined in New York, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia—as well as 250 lawyers in California and nearly 70 lawyers in Houston and Dallas combined.[2]

2009 Recession and Layoffs

In March 2009, Morgan Lewis laid off 55 attorneys and 161 staff. Later that year, the firm took the unusual move of including laid off attorneys when mailing their "alumni packets." The packet was reported by some recipients as being in poor taste, as it contained not only a report on how well the firm was doing (including success in hiring attorneys), but also an invitation to the firm's holiday party.[3]
