Sholavandan (Tamil: சோழவந்தான்) is a panchayat town in Madurai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located at the bank of Vaigai River. It is one among the 12 "town- panchayats" of Madurai district.[2]

Etymology
The town has been variously referred to as "Sholavandan", "Solaikuruchi" and "Senagapuri".In historic period, the town belongs to Pandya_Kingdom and it was supposed to had a war between Chola and Pandya here.But the king of Chola, fall in the beauty of this greeny village and abandoned the war.Hence the town called as Cholavandan [Cholan+Uvandan] . Uvandan stands for fall in beauty in Tamil.He found the village and it's greeny cultivation, up and above Tanjore and called this town as "Chinna Tanjai"(Tamil: சின்ன தஞ்சை).
History
This town appears in history from the Sangam period itself.Some Jain beds around the village mentions this town in 1st Century CE itself.[3]
Also it is found in Jain bed in Tamil-Brahmi script inscription as- “பாகன்ஊர் பே(ர)தன்; பிடன் இத்தசெபோன்”
where பாகன்ஊர் refers to village near Sholavandan[4]
Civic administration
The Chairman of the Town is Kalavathiraja who won as an independent in the local body elections conducted in 2005.[1] There are 18 wards as part of this Town Panchayat each represented by an elected member.[5] Sholavandan comes under the vadipatti, a taluk in the madurai district. Sholavandan is a Revenue village under this taluk along with 77 villages.
Politics
Elected in the Tamil Nadu state assembly election, 2006, P. Moorthy of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam represents Sholavandan in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.[6][7] Sholavandan assembly constituency is part of Dindigul (Lok Sabha constituency),[8] which is represented by N.S.V. Chitthan of the Indian National Congress.[9].
Demographics
As of 2001[update] India census[10], Sholavandan had a population of 21,661. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Sholavandan has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79%, and female literacy is 65%. In Sholavandan, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Economy
The prime occupation of the people is Agriculture.Sholavandan is very famous for the "betel-leaves" grown there, and other major plantations are coconut, rice and banana.Thenkarai village is called small "Coconut island" near by town.
Tourism
- Jenagai Mariamman Temple, Janaga Narayana Perumal Kovil, Sri Santhana Gopala Krishnaswamy Kovil situated in Double Street, Saneeswaran Kovil and Sri Pralayanathaswami Kovil in Sivan Kovil street. Thenkarai Sivan Kovil(Akilandeeswari kovil) near by the town & Vaigai River. Other notable temples include Chithra Vallava perumal temple situated on the village kurivithurai 8km near by the town and Edaga Naadha Swamy Kovil in Thiruvedagam village.
