Manurewa High School is a multi-cultural school. It has European 33%, Polynesian 26%, Maori 22%, Asian 15% and other groups 4%. Some cultures include Australian, Cambodian, Chinese (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore), Cook Island, Dutch, Filipino, Fijian, French, French Polynesia, Indian, Indonesian, Iranian, Iraqi, Irish, New Zealand, Korean, Malaysian, New Caledonian, Niue, Polynesian, Samoan, South African, Sri Lankan, Syrian, Thai, Tongan, Vietnamese. Once a year it holds an International Week to honour this multi-culturalism.
It is also notable as the only major secondary school with a large pool of resources dedicated to the education of blind and visually impaired students. This is arranged through the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind in association with their major educational facility, the Homai College for the Blind which is within walking distance of Manurewa High School. Blind and Visually Impaired students are placed in normal classroom environments and are assisted through the provisioning of specialised equipment and resources (such as Braille versions of textbooks), and staff trained to meet their special needs are available. This allows the students to participate fully in the school curriculum without any significant segregation.
Manurewa High School Rugby Academy
In 2002, with the blessing of the Board of Trustees and the then Principal the late Ken Thomson, a dedicated Rugby Academy was introduced with the help of MHS Old Boys Andrew Talaimanu and Lindsay Raki.The first intake was 25 boys in 2003 in Year 9 (The Babies) playing in the U/14 Open weight Grade. This has been hugely successful with now over 200 players in 2007. The Boys 1st XV have been very successful pushing local rivals Wesley College to a 12 all draw in 2006 and in 2007 NZ National 1st XV Champions Gisborne Boys' High School to a close fought loss of 21-13.
Tim Nanai Williams (an original 2003 Baby) was selected for NZ Secondary Schools in 2006 and 2007 at fullback. The Girls 1st XV won the Auckland Girls Secondary Schools Championship in 2007. The Director of Rugby is Old Boy and former Counties Manukau Steelers NPC coach Andrew Talaimanu.
