The Icelandic singer Björk appeared for the first time in 1976 on Radio One, an Icelandic radio station, singing "I Love to Love" and achieved a deal with a record company through which she released in 1977 her first solo album entitled Björk.

Afterwards, she formed several bands including Tappi Tíkarrass, KUKL and The Sugarcubes, the latter being the most successful. After the Sugarcubes disbanded in 1992, Björk proceeded with her solo career and in 1993 released an album called Debut. Since her debut album, she has been signed to One Little Indian Records in the United Kingdom and Polydor Records and Universal Records in Europe and other territories. In North America she was signed with Elektra Records and Atlantic Records until 2007, and is now under another Warner Music Group division, Nonesuch Records, distributed by Warner Bros. Records.

Singles information

  • The first two singles off Volta, "Earth Intruders" and "Innocence", were first released in digital format then in physical format.[26] In January 2008, "Earth Intruders" was released as a special package CD, DVD and two 12" vinyls.[27]
  • Björk has had three top 10 singles and seven top 20 singles in the UK. She also has 20 singles that have charted within the top 40, aside from "Hunter", which was released as a limited edition (instant deletion single) from the Homogenic album and "Earth Intruders" which charted due to downloads.[28]
  • The first single from Homogenic, "Jóga", had a limited release of 3000 copies, meaning that it did not chart.[citation needed]
  • "Play Dead" was not included on the initial release of Debut. After the release of the single, Debut was re-issued with the song as a bonus 12th track in the UK and Europe.
  • "It's Not Up to You" was also scheduled to be the fourth single from Vespertine, however the imminent arrival of her daughter, Isadora, resulted in the single being shelved, though pre-production of a promo video was made, and rumours have it that remixes were made.
  • Björk has 5 U.S. Hot Dance Club Play top tens, and three number-ones: "Big Time Sensuality", "Hyperballad" and "I Miss You".[29]
  • She has had two charting singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Singles Sales Chart. "Hidden Place" at #49 in 2001 and "The Dull Flame of Desire" at #3 in 2008.
