May 28 ,1962 ) is an Northern Irishsinger /songwriter and poet, born inBelfast . He started writing poetry and music from a young age, penning a poem called "Riots" at the age of 9. He attendedMethodist College Belfast . He studiedEnglish Literature at Robinson College,Cambridge University , graduating in 1984.He released his first EP "
Religious Persuasion " in1985 onStiff Records , and his first album "Rave on Andy White " in1986 . He has since collaborated with people likePeter Gabriel ,Sinéad O'Connor and English producerJohn Leckie . White won Ireland's Hot Press Songwriter of the Year Award in1992 .In
1995 he released an album ("Altitude") withTim Finn (ofSplit Enz ) andLiam Ó Maonlaí (ofHothouse Flowers ); the trio recorded as ALT.In
1999 a book of lyrics and poems ("The Music Of What Happens") was published by Lagan Press.After many albums with roots label
Cooking Vinyl , and a live performance album forReal World Records /WOMAD , White currently records forALT Recordings through UK label Floating World in Europe, and independently elsewhere.White tours consistently, performing live at the
WOMAD UK festival in2000 and hosting the gala finale in2005 , MC'ing the mainstage at theFleadh in London for its first two years, and performing again in2002 .White is well-known for the political and literary content in his work, and the lyrical perspicacity displayed throughout his career.
Although an accomplished
vocalist ,guitarist andbass player , White is best known for hissongs such as ("James Joyce's Grave ", "Street Scenes From My Heart ").White currently lives in
