Germantown is a town in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 278 at the 2000 census. The village of Germantown encloses the town of Germantown.

Germantown, Wisconsin is ranked the 30th best place to live in all of the United States by Money Magazine.

History

The town of Germantown used to incorporate the entire area now included in the village of Germantown. In 1964, in order to prevent annexation by the city of Milwaukee, the town allowed the village to annex most of its territory. Further annexations in 1965 and 1976 left it at its current size.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.5 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 278 people, 89 households, and 76 families residing in the town. The population density was 160.2 people per square mile (61.7/km²). There were 94 housing units at an average density of 54.2/sq mi (20.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.28% White and 0.72% Black or African American. 0.00% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 89 households out of which 47.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.3% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 13.5% were non-families. 11.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.12 and the average family size was 3.40.

In the town the population was spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $75,000, and the median income for a family was $75,159. Males had a median income of $53,750 versus $27,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $25,694. About 2.2% of families and 3.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.3% of those under the age of eighteen and none of those sixty five or over.

Education

Germantown, Wisconsin has its own school district (Germantown School District). This district contains four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. There was a New Elementary School Referendum early April 2008 to make a new elementary school. This plan was voted down by Germantown citizens.
