First planned in the early 1980s, ZooMontana hosts wildlife native to the Rockies and exotic animals from around the world.[2] The zoo hosts about 70,000 visitors per year.[1]
The animals all live in enclosures designed to imitate their natural habitats.
Exhibits
ZooMontana is divided into two main 'habitats' in addition to other exhibits.
- Asia Habitat
The Asia Habitat starts by the wolves and is a paved path through a cottonwood forest. The path splits at one point and one half is a nature trail. As you continue the path splits again, one going towards the Siberian Tiger, and the other going to the sika deer and red panda.
- North American Loop Habitat
The North American Loop includes habitats for the Eastern gray wolf, North American river otter, bighorn sheep, turkey vulture, wolverine, bald eagle, porcupine, raven, and brown bear, as well as ponds for waterfowl including Swan Geese, Emperor Geese, Arctic Geese, and Domestic Geese.
- Inside Exhibits
Inside Exhibits include the Living Wall, and other small exhibits including animals from South America and other native to the Montana area.
One large exhibit housing pygmy marmosets, another housing cane toads, and a there is also an exhibit housing an emerald tree boa.
The Education Animals exhibits are located near the pygmy marmosets. Animals here include Wyomong toads, iguana, mink, chinchilla, Southern flying squirrel, and Western screech-owl on the wall of windows. Also, depending on the season, the turkey vulture can be located in this area.
Degus are another inside exhibit.
- Living Wall
The Living Wall includes displays for the Madagascar hissing cockroach, tiger salamander, ball python, Great Plains toad, Woodhouse's toad, green tree frog, box turtle, snapping turtle, and rubber boa.
- Barn
The Barn is home to mostly domesticated animals, including a Belgian draft horse, pygmy goats, peafowl, rabbits, goats, and rock doves.
- Gardens
The one-acre Sensory Garden is planted with both native and exotic plants intended to stimulate all of your senses. The zoo also includes a Montana garden with native plants, and Dottie's Garden, which is home to plants that use very little water.[3]
