Germany

Unlike its long-distance counterpart DB Fernverkehr, DB Regio does not operate trains on its own account. Services are ordered and paid for by the Bundesländer or their Landkreise. Competition for those state-sponsored services is somewhat more fierce than for long-distance services. Consequently, DB Regio has lost a considerable number of routes to its competitors.

Some states have awarded long-term contracts to DB Regio (usually 10 to 15 years), which has sparked harsh criticism from anti-trust groups[who?][citation needed].

Sweden

ÖstgötaTrafiken has given DB Regio Sverige a contract to operate local trains for 10 years from December 12, 2010.[1]

UK

In January 2008, it was announced that, subject to regulatory approval, DB Regio would take over Laing Rail in the United Kingdom.[2] As a result, DB Regio now owns Chiltern Railways and is joint operator of London Overground (with MTR Corporation) and was a joint operator of Wrexham & Shropshire (with Renaissance Trains), until January 2011 when they ceased operation.

In February 2009 DB Regio was shortlisted[3] and on 3 December 2009 named as preferred bidder for a contract to operate the Tyne and Wear Metro,[4] and took over operations on 1 April 2010.
