The lines S1 and S2 are operated with
push-pull train s with a Class 143 locomotive and two modernisedBilevel car s of theDeutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR and a newer bilevelcab car . The trains can be extended up to six coaches. The S1 is operated every 15 minutes, the S2 every hour. During the rush hour the S1 operates every 10 minutes. The line S3 is operated by
diesel multiple unit s of Class 642 or Class 628 because the train service is supposed to be extended to the ferry terminal in a few years. Also the S3 has only a few passengers and therefore the small multiple unit is sufficient.Future plans
Plans exist for a
tram-train network in the City. For this purpose the Ostseebahn GmbH was founded. After 2010 a new line "S4" will start to operate.
