Ovidiu Stîngă (born 5 December 1972 in Craiova) is a retired Romanian football player and current manager.

Club career

His football career began at Viitorul Craiova. In 1990, his first league debut started at Universitatea Craiova at the age of 17. on 28 November 1990 against Corvinul Hunedoara winning 8-1. By the end of the season he'd been loaned to Jiul IELIF Craiova, but again the summer of 1991 he returned to U'Craiova. The 1992/1993 season he was the team's best player and took third place in the league and won the Romanian Cup.

In summer 1995 he went abroad to Spain at UD Salamanca. He debuted in Primera División on 3 September, against Espanyol Barcelona winning 1:3 At Salamanca he scored 11 goals, the second leading scorer in the team, but the club finished last and were relegated to Segunda División.

In 1996 he joined the Dutch team, PSV Eindhoven. In his first season in the Eredivisie he played only seven matches. In the 1997/1998 season, he was one of the key players for PSV as they finished runners-up in the Dutch Championship. In 1998 he suffered a serious injury, which resulted a year break in the 1998/1999 season and only once appeared on the pitch. In 2000 and 2001, with PSV winning two successive Dutch Championship titles as well the Dutch Super Cup's.

In summer of 2001 he returned to Romania with Dinamo Bucharest, which won the title. The next two seasons he spent at U'Craiova, returning after 7 years. In 2004/2005 he was loaned to the Dutch side Helmond Sport. In 2006 he coached/played for U'Craiova in the Romanian second division, of 2005/2006, in which a year letter helped his team to get promoted in the first league of 2006/2007 season before ending his career.

National career

He debuted on 31 January 1993 in a friendly game against Ecuador 0:3 played in Guayaquil. In 1994, he was called for Romania at the World Cup in the U.S., but didn't play any game. In 1996 he was appointed by Anghel Iordănescu at the European Championship in England, where he played one match against Spain, losing 1:2. In contrast, in 1998, played 2 matches at the World Cup in France, Winning vs. Colombia (1:0) and England (2:1). His national career ended in the same year.[1]
