Plaka is located 9 km from Psofida, south of Patras, southwest of Kalavryta, west-northwest of Tripoli and northeast of Olympia and Pyrgos. It is connected with the road connecting the GR-33 (Patras - Tripoli) near Tripotama and the Tripoli-Levidi/Karytania Kalavryta Road about 35 to 40 km east.
Geography and history
Plaka was historically known as Morochova or Morohova (Μορόχοβα). It was ruled by the Ottomans until the Greek War of Independence. Plaka became an independent community from 1913 until 1997 when it became a part of the newly formed municipality of Aroania. Plaka adopted its current name in the early 20th century.
After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt and emigration occurred at a higher rate until 1961 through to 1991, it became one of the few villages in mountainous Achaia to regain is population. Dessino became connected with asphalt in the 2000s. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. In 1997, the ex-community (now a village and a municipal district) joined to become the newly formed municipality of Aroania.
Today, it is a village with a few inhabitants, it is populated during the summer months. The population depends on olive productions.
