Filia, Achaea

Filia (Greek: Φίλια) also with the second a accented is a Greek village built over two mountains in the southern Achaea prefecture. Filia is located southeast of Patras, south-southwest of Kalavryta and northwest of Tripoli The GR-33 (Patras - Tripoli) is to the south. Filiahad a 2001 population of was 228 for the village and 326 for the municipal district.

Population

Geography

Its geography are mare up of farmlands that dominate the area, the mountains are around the area. Filia is builtin the northern foot of Profitis Ilias on the hill known as Mouzakeika or Mouzakaiika (Μουζακεϊκα) at the elevation of 900 m.

History

Filia was ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the Greek War of Independence of 1821. Under the Capodistrian Plan, the municipality was formed in 1998 and eliminated the old community of Dilia and was the fifth most populated in the province of Kalavryta.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, much of the population left for larger towns and cities especially the nearby Patras. The population declined by two thirds until 1991, but it slowly recovered by 20% between 1991 and 2001.

Houses were stone-built until the 1950s and did not surpass modern-style homes until the 1980s. It was linked with pavement in the 1980s. Most of the homes are abandoned today.

Economy

Its main production are olives and cattle alond with fruits and vegetables. The majority of the population are based in agriculture as well as some other businesses.

Filia has a school, a church, a station named Chorofylakis (Χωροφυλακής) and a square ("plateia"). Its nearest lyceum (middle school), a nearest school gymnasium (secondary school) are in Paos.
