Mike MacKenzie (born 18 November 1958) is a Scottish National Party MSP for the Highlands and Islands region.[1]

Mike MacKenzie was born in Oban. His parents moved to Glasgow when he was very young and although he was brought up in the city he, like many others who are children of Argyll and Bute parents, retained a strong connection with Argyll.

Mike spent School and University holidays working as a salmon fisherman around Easdale and Mull.

He was educated at Allan Glens School and Glasgow University. He and his wife, Lynn, moved to Easdale Island in 1980 where they raised two children.

Mike established a construction business in 1983. He is also a skilled craftsman with lifelong interests in design and sustainability.

He is passionate about retaining traditional craft skills and has trained a number of apprentices. He trained Argyll and Bute’s first female joiner who now lectures in joinery at a college in Fife.

In 1997 he was a founding director of Eilean Eisdeal, Easdale islands Community development company.

Mike was elected to the Scottish Parliament as a list MSP on May 3, 2011. He was elected as the list candidate for Highlands and Islands.

He has a special interest in planning, building, construction and community development.

Mike is a member of the following Committees: Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee (Member) and Subordinate Legislation Committee (Member)

Mike is also a member of the following Cross-Party Groups: Cross-Party Group in the Scottish Parliament on Architecture and the Built Environment (Member), Cross-Party Group in the Scottish Parliament on Construction (Member), and Cross-Party Group in the Scottish Parliament on Recreational Boating and Marine Tourism (Member)

In May 2011 Mr MacKenzie was 'chastised' by a sheriff for going to Parliament rather than appearing in a civil court case to face allegations that his company failed to pay a £4,000 electricians bill. ref>SNP MSP is chastised by sheriff - Scotsman.com News</ref> Shortly after being elected in May, Mr MacKenzie, resigned as a director of this company and disposed of his shares. In July 2011 the company chose not to defend the case further and dropped the counter claim against the pursuer.[2]
