History
The Government of Andhra Pradesh established its first University of Health Sciences fulfilling the recommendations of several committees. Thuda from 1 November 1986. After the death of its founder the University was named after him as NTR University of Health Sciences, Andhra Pradesh, with effect from February 1998.
Facilities
There is a library and computer center from where the library network is operated. A guest house facility is available with different categories of accommodation for the faculty, examiners etc. The Examinations section is housed in a separate area with special security; because of electronically controlled access, the section is accessible only to authorized staff and officers. Biometric electronic attendance recording is also installed.
Courses
The University has graduate and postgraduate degree, diploma and "super specialty" courses in Modern Medicine; graduate and postgraduate degree courses in Dental Surgery, Nursing, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, and Unani; graduate degree courses in Naturopathy, Physiotherapy and Medical Laboratory Technology; and a postgraduate course in M.Sc. Applied Nutrition.
The total number of colleges affiliated to the University at the time of its establishment was 27 but has now risen to 184. The degrees awarded by the university are recognized by statutory bodies including the Medical Council of India, the Dental Council of India, the Central Council of Indian Medicine, the Central Council of Homoeopathy and the Indian Nursing Council.

Convocations
- The 7th annual convocation on 13 February 2003. Doctor of Science was conferred on Kakarla Subba Rao, C. M. Habibullah and Lingam Suryanarayana by Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Chancellor of the University, Sri Surjit Singh Barnala.[2] Pradeep Kumar Dave, Director of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, delivered the convocational address on "the relevance of medical education for overall health cares".
- The 9th Annual Convocation was held on 23 April 2005 at Vijayawada. Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde, His Excellency, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Chancellor of the University presided over the function.
- The 10th Annual Convocation was held on 1 March 2006 as authorized by his Excellency the Governor of Andhra Pradesh and the Chancellor of this University, Sri Rameshwar Thakur.
- The 11th Annual Convocation was held on 28 February, 2007 in Vijayawada as authorized by his Excellency the Governor of Andhra Pradesh and the Chancellor of this University, Sri Rameshwar Thakur.
- The 12th Annual Convocation was held on 18 February 2008 conducted by Chancellor and Governor Sri Narayan Dutt Tiwari. The university has conferred honorary degrees of 'Doctor of Sciences' to noted Neurosurgeon, Dr. Sunkara Bala Parameswara Rao and Former Director of Medical Education Chintala Raja Rama Mohan Reddy.
- The 13th Annual Convocation was held in Vijayawada on 13 March 2009. Vice-Chancellor A. V. Krishnam Raju conducted the convocation in the absence of Chancellor and Governor Narayan Dutt Tiwari.Doctor of Science (Honoris Cause) was presented to K. K. Talwar, famous Cardiologist, A. Ranganadha Rao, famous Urologist, P. S. R. K. Haranath and M. Veera Raghava Reddy, famous Neurologist.[3]
