National Institute of Technology, Warangal (NITW; Hindi: राष्ट्रीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान, वरांगल) is an undergraduate and post graduate engineering institute located in Warangal, India. Formerly known as the Regional Engineering College, Warangal (RECW), it is the first among the 17 Regional Engineering Colleges established in India and was founded in 1959 by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.It was started with an objective of National Integration. Specific number of Seats were reserved for various states in India to encourage students from all the states of India to live and learn together and understand each other's culture and traditions. Today it is an Institute of National Importance awarding bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in engineering, technology, basic sciences and management.

Location

NIT Warangal, previously known as REC Warangal, is located in the northern region of Andhra Pradesh. The 256-acre (1.04 km²) residential campus is located on both sides of the National Highway No. 202 (Hyderabad - Warangal - Khammam). The institute is close to Kazipet Junction (2 km) a major railway junction and also Warangal railway station, making it very accessible. The nearest airport is in Hyderabad 135 km. The state road transport APSRTC buses ply at intervals of 5–10 minutes, between Hanamkonda, Warangal and Hyderabad bus stands.

City and the campus

The 256 acres of land is divided by the NH 202 highway into staff quarters, CCE and the Main campus, amidst the Kazipet and Hanamkonda in Warangal District. The City of Warangal is known for its Kakatiya dynasty, who ruled Warangal during the 11th and 12th Century and their monuments like Thousand Pillar temple, Bhadrakali temple, Warangal fort and Ramappa temple. The main entrance of the campus depicts the traditional elegance of Kakatiya Thoranam. The main entrance of the campus is inscribe with the words "कर्मदैव हि संसिद्धि", meaning that the one who works shall succeed.

The International meets, conferences and student activities are held in Abdul Kalam Hall, New Seminar, New conference Hall and The Auditorium. The library has 143,000 books, back volumes, technical pamphlets, standards, CD-ROMS, video cassettes and receives 2000 on-line Journals through INDEST set-up by MHRD, Government of India.

The heart of the campus is the department area where departments of engineering and science are interconnected with small bridges.

The faculty have quarters inside and ouside the campus according to their status with all the residential facilities. The students' hostels and messes are at the rear end of the campus.

Growth

In 1959 the institute started with civil, electrical and mechanical engineering departments.A Bachelors program in Chemical Engineering was started in 1964. The following year saw the start of Metallurgical engineering program. In 1971, the college started the undergraduate program in Electronics and Communication engineering. In 1976, its affiliation was changed from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University to Kakatiya University, with which it remained affiliated, until the institute was granted a deemed university status in 2002.

In 1994, the institute was selected by the Overseas Development Administration (ODA) of the UK for exchange programs between the UK and India in the field of information technology. This program ran till 1999. In 2000, the institute started its MBA program. The next year, a center of Software Technology Parks of India was opened in its campus(it is now not functioning). In September 2002, the college was renamed thes National Institute of Technology and was given a deemed university status. In 2006,the institute started a Bachelors program in Biotechnology. It has been given the status of Institute of National Importance (INI) bringing it at par with IITs, IISc and ISI on 15 August 2007.

Thanks to UNESCO and UK assistance in the past, developmental activities were undertaken. The World Bank Assistance under TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme) since 2004 has been a help in the development NITW.

There has been a consistently high industry-placement record for the students of NIT Warangal.While being minimally hit by the economic slow-down of 2007-2009, campus-recruitment has bounced back to a whopping 95% in the 2010-11 season, with reputed companies like Microsoft, Adobe, DE Shaw, Amazon, Google, Facebook, Morgan Stanley, GoldMan Sachs, Qualcomm, Analog Devices, Texas Instruments, Nvidia, Cypress Semiconductors, Oracle, IBM, UBS, NTPC, IOCL, L&T, TATA Motors, Reliance Industries, AFCONS hiring students from across departments.

Administration

NIT Warangal is an autonomous T-school.It functions under the NIT act. The governing body consists of The Minister of Human Resource and Development, Government of India, who is the Chairman of the Council. Each NIT has Board of Governors who take up administration matters.

In addition to engineering programs,post graduate programs are offered in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Management.

The Metallurgical, Civil and Mechanical Departments are some of the oldest in the country having been founded in 1959. The Electrical Department has nurtured the largest number of Engg. Ph.d graduates.The civil department has a prestigious staff, who are frequently consulted by the government of Andhra Pradesh to assist various construction and irrigation projects being undertaken in the state. The civil department in NITW is considered to be one of the best in the country, second only to IIT roorkee.^{[citation needed]}

In addition to undergraduate programs, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers two postgraduate programs. Master of Computer Applications(MCA) and Master of Technology (M.Tech). The M.Tech program offers two specializations, CSE and Information security.

The Electronics and Communications Engineering department offers 3 two years post-graduate (M.Tech.) programs: [Electronics Instrumentation], VLSI System design and Advanced Communication Systems (ACS). In VLSI Systems design, it is a special manpower development center setup by Department of Electronics (DoE), Government of India.

The Electrical Engineering department offers postgraduate programs in Power Systems and Electrical Machines and Industrial Drives. The Civil engineering departments offers five masters level programs. The specializations offered are Engineering Structures, Water resources Engineering, Transportation Engineering., Geotechnical Engineering and Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems. The PG programs of mechanical engineering department offer specialization in Thermal Engineering, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and Computer integrated Manufacturing and Advanced Manufacturing Processes. The masters program of Metallurgical engineering department is in the fields of Industrial Metallurgy.

In the science faculties, M.Sc.(Tech.) in Engineering Physics with specialization in Photonics, Electronics and Instrumentation is offered by Physics. The Chemistry department offers masters program in Industrial Chemistry with specialization in 'Dyes, Drugs, Pharmaceuticals and Pesticides' or Modern Methods of Chemical Analysis. The masters courses of Mathematics departments are in the fields of Applied Mathematics and 'Mathematics and Scientific computing'.

Student activities

Festivities

NIT Warangal holds technical and cultural events throughout the year. Major annual events include Technozion (technical fest), SpringSpree (cultural fest) and Cura (management fest). The event called Zero Gravity is held every year which is an interbranch competition in cultural events.

Cura

The School of Management, NIT Warangal conducts its Management Fest, Cura annually. B Schools all over the country send participants into it.

SpringSpree

SpringSpree', popularly known as Spree, is the annual cultural festival of NIT Warangal. It is a three-day long carnival held towards the end of January or in the beginning of March every year. It was established in 1982 and in 2012 will be in its 26th edition.

Technozion

Technozion is the annual technical festival of of NIT Warangal. It is held every year over a period of three days on the NIT Warangal campus. It started off on a small scale in 2006.

Student associations

Every Branch has their Technical association with a Staff head and executive body of students. They organise lectures on special topics, conduct quizzes , conduct workshops , enlighten the recent developments in field , conduct placement talks etc. They help in welcoming the First year students by conducting FRESHERS and showing them the principles and goals of their course.

Placements at NIT Warangal

The highest ever pay package at this 51-year old institute is made by social networking site Facebook in the year 2011. It recruited a student at Rs 45 lakh per annum.This has set a new benchmark at NIT Warangal in that the highest salary any student from the institute had bagged so far was Rs 20 lakh per annum. From the 2010-11 batch as many as three students had got jobs that paid them Rs 20 lakh per annum, sources at NIT said.He will be placed in technical branch.Their names were Mahidara, Mukundan etc.^[2]
