Robert J. Froehlich (born April 28, 1953) is an American investment strategist and author. He is currently Executive Vice President & Chief Investment Strategist for Wealth Management at The Hartford where he also serves as an Officer of The Hartford Mutual Funds.

Biography

Froehlich received his doctorate in public policy in 1979 from California Coast University (formerly California Western University), a master's in management in 1978 from Central Michigan University, a master's in public administration in 1976 and a bachelor's in history in 1975 from the University of Dayton. His first job was working in the steel mills for U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh, PA., in the summers while attending college. Froehlich began his professional career in the public sector in Ohio, where he also served as campaign finance chairman for Paul R. Leonard, the 58th lieutenant governor of Ohio. He then moved to the private sector, serving as a senior executive with Ernst & Whinney. Froehlich formerly served as the Vice Chairman of Deutsche Asset Management, the money management arm of Deutsche Bank. Before joining Kemper Funds, which become Scudder Investments after it was acquired by Scudder Stevens & Clark, and is now DWS Investments after it was merged with Deutsche Asset Management, he was with Van Kampen Merritt, where he served as director of research until his appointment as chief investment strategist. While at Van Kampen, Froehlich was elected to three "All-American" Institutional Research Teams sponsored by Global Guarantee, The Bond Buyer and Ratings, Research and Review. Froehlich also formerly served on the Board of Trustees for the University of Dayton.

Froehlich receives over a thousand speaking requests per year. He has delivered speeches on investing on six different continents -- North America, South America, Europe, Australia, Africa and Asia, spanning 107 different countries. In North America, Froehlich also has delivered speeches on investing in all 50 states in the United States. In addition, Froehlich formerly served as one of the select members of the "Distinguished Speakers Series" for Crystal Cruises. Because of his high-profile role, Froehlich has had two national advertising campaigns revolve around him. The first national ad campaign for Kemper Funds was launched in March 2000. Because of the great success of that campaign, in May 2001, Scudder then launched a second national ad campaign. Froehlich is also the only "Wall Street" strategist who has been invited to both open and close the markets for both the NASDAQ (April 15, 2002) and the New York Stock Exchange (April 17, 2003).

Froehlich appears regularly on a variety of financial television programs on CNBC, CNN, Fox News, Fox Business, Bloomberg TV and Reuters News TV as well as other domestic and international financial networks. Froehlich was one of the regular guest co-hosts for one of CNBC's highest rated program "Squawk Box" and a frequent guest co-host for CNBC Europe's "Squawk Box" based in London and he has also appeared as a guest co-host on CNBC Asia’s “Squawk Box” based in Singapore. He was the first and remains the only person to ever be a "Squawk Box" guest host in all three locations; Singapore, London and New York. In addition to "Squawk Box," Froehlich has the distinction of having appeared as a guest on every CNBC program. He currently is one of the regular guests on "The Kudlow Report". He was also selected as one of the original regular guest financial commentators when CNN launched its new network, CNNfn, in December, 1995. At Fox News Froehlich has become one of the regular “special guests” on their highest rated weekend show, “Bulls and Bears.” In October 2007 when Fox launched its new business network, Fox Business, it too called on Froehlich to help launch the new network by appearing as a guest on the very first day. Froehlich has been interviewed on some of the industry's most prestigious investment programs, including "Wall Street Week With Louis Rukeyser," "Money Line" with Lou Dobbs, "The MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour" and "World Business" with Alexander Haig.

Froehlich has also authored five investment books. In his first book, The Three Bears Are Dead! published in April 1998, Froehlich explored the investment impact of low inflation, falling interest rates and declining government spending around the globe. His second investment book, Where The Money I$, published in July 2001, identified the dominant global investment trends and themes for the decade ahead and explained his investment theory, which he dubbed "Sectornomics." This book reached the #1 best-seller on Amazon.com for investment books (August 29, 2001) and has since been translated into Korean, Orthodox Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. In his third investment book, Investment Megatrends, published in January, 2006, Froehlich identified four prominent global shifts and investment strategies that could benefit from those shifts, based in part on his experience traveling the world and seeing these shifts for himself. It has since been translated into Korean, Chinese and German. His fourth investment book, A Bull for All Seasons published in September 2008, is a compilation of Froehlich’s commentaries from the past decade, in which he explains the issues and events that drove his investment choices. It has since been translated into Simplified Chinese, Korean and Chinese Traditional (Hong Kong version)and Polish. His latest book, "ANTs Using Alternative and Non-Traditional Investments to Allocate Your Assets in an Uncertain World", published in 2011, shows the average investor why alternative and non-traditional investments, like commodities and currencies are necessary for both preserving wealth and growing investments in the face of the ever increasing volatility of the world's financial markets. In addition to writing books, Froehlich's reputation on Wall Street has led numerous authors to seek out Froehlich to review their final manuscript and offer his personal endorsement of their work. The media continually seeks Froehlich's analysis and opinions, and he is frequently quoted in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Barron's. His weekly investment commentary interpreting current events driving the markets has gained Froehlich acclaim within the brokerage community as an important investment strategist and can be found at www.hartfordinvestor.com. Froehlich is also a member of the prestigious Forbes Investor Team. As a member of that team he authors an investment column twice a month that is posted on Forbes.com (www.forbes.com) He currently serves as an outside independent director for privately held company, Davidson Investment Advisors, Inc. and as a consultant to the Pittsburgh Steelers of the N.F.L. where he assists them in the area of Player Development regarding personal finance and investing matters

Personal life

Froehlich is married to Cheryl and has two daughters, Marianne and Stephanie. He currently resides in Willowbrook, Illinois. He was born April 28, 1953 in Pittsburgh, PA, U.S.A., where his childhood dream was to become a professional baseball player. He played semi-pro baseball in Pittsburgh on the same team that produced major league player, coach and manager, Art Howe, who is also a Pittsburgh native. Keeping that Pittsburgh sports connection alive, Froehlich currently serves as a consultant to the Pittsburgh Steelers of the N.F.L. where he assists them in the area of Player Development regarding personal finance and investing matters.
