History
The D.C. United Academy was created in 2005 in an effort to provide local talent an opportunity to have professional training.
Structure
D.C. United Academy is structured with several youth squads, ranging from players under the age of 23, to pre-development clubs for 11 to 12 year olds.
The D.C. United Academy features youth squads ranging from players under the age of 23, to pre-academy teams that are for players aged 14 and 15. The top age groups in the academy field teams in the fourth tier USL Premier Development League and the fifth-tier USL Super-20 League.
The under-18 and 17 squads compete in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, which composes of the most elite youth academies in the United States. Presently, United's U-18 and 17 teams play in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference in the league.
The lower, pre-academy sides, compete in the Super Y-League.
The youngest portion of the academy is devoted to players from the ages of 11 to 13. Although D.C. United does not field U-11 to U-13 academy teams, the club organizes clinics, camps and training sessions for younger players, and offer select players opportunities to join the lower age youth academy sides. These clinics are generally run throughout the year through a string of tryout sessions.[1]
