After cheating death with his escape from a Brythunian prison mine, Conan is badly injured in a fight with a bear. He is nursed back to health by Songa, whom he eventually lives with. Conan finds her tribe's simplicity rewarding, but his idyllic life is disrupted when Brythunian soldiers, under orders to find the magic gems Songa's tribe use, attack and destroy his village.
The other narrative is the story of the sorcerer Tamsin, who watches her mother get raped and her family killed by mercenaries hired by Brythunia's king. She gains magical powers of revenge through the power of her doll, who is inhabited by Ninga, a minor deity. Tamsin kills Brythunia's King Typhas and becomes ruler.
