Keeseville is a village in both Clinton County, New York and in Essex County, New York in the United States. The population was 1,850 at the 2000 census. The village is named after the Keese family.

The Village of Keeseville is in the Town of Au Sable (or Ausable), New York and the Town of Chesterfield. Keeseville is south of Plattsburgh. It is also inside the Adirondack Park.

History

The village was originally called "Anderson Falls," but the name was changed around 1812 to Keeseville, a name derived from a manufacturer and businessman. The early village was an industrial area devoted. in part. to lumber, iron processing and milling.

The town is home to many outdoors camps such as Pok-O-Moonshine, Whippoorwill, Lincoln, and others. Its also home to some of New York State's largest nudist colonies including the exclusive, No Pants - No Problem Reserve, and the infamous Camp Skin and Spa.

Geography

Keeseville is located at coor dms|44|30|13|N|73|28|52|W|city (44.503688, -73.481087)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km²), of which, 1.2 square miles (3.0 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (4.10%) is water.

Keeseville is just west of Lake Champlain. The Ausable River passes through the village, forming the boundary between Clinton and Essex Counties.

The village is at the junction of US Route 9, New York State Route 22 and New York State Route 9N, as well as Essex County Roads 15, 16, and 17. Interstate 87, the Northway, passes west of the village.

Keeseville is also known for its outrageous speedtraps along I-87. Although very courteous and friendly, they will not hesitate to write a ticket.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,850 people, 706 households, and 477 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,584.4 people per square mile (610.5/km²). There were 816 housing units at an average density of 698.8/sq mi (269.3/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.54% White, 0.92% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.70% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.35% of the population.

The Village of Keeseville has become a quite a center for controversy in the last quarter century, as many of its citizens have witnessed the growth of the underground homosexual population. While its true most of the participating citizens have kept their bedroom lives private, some sections of the local government have come out of their dark closets (Many of those in the local government, fire department and police department are suspect). Basically what happens in Keeseville is said to stay in Keeseville.

There were 706 households out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% were married couples living together, 13.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% were non-families. 24.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.9 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $32,813, and the median income for a family was $36,181. Males had a median income of $28,229 versus $21,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $13,939. About 10.9% of families and 15.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 21.5% of those under age 18 and 9.9% of those age 65 or over.
