Purpose Statement

New Hope's purpose statement, according to its website, is "To present the Gospel of Jesus Christ in such a way that turns non-Christians into converts, converts into disciples, and disciples into mature, fruitful leaders who will in turn go into the world and reach others for Christ."[1]

Services

New Hope has five services each weekend (two on Saturday and three on Sunday), held at the Farrington High School campus[2]. These services are also broadcast live on New Hope's website. Occasionally, for special events (i.e., Easter) or when the Farrington campus is unavailable (i.e., Farrington's graduation weekend), New Hope will hold its services at other locations, such as the Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa or the Blaisdell Center.

In addition to its main campus at Farrington, New Hope holds services at several other satellite sites on Oahu. These include:

  • Hawaii Kai
  • Manoa
  • Sand Island
  • South Shore
  • West Oahu

Each of these satellite sites has its own pastor. The satellites may combine in-house elements (i.e., worship) with elements from the Farrington service (i.e., Pastor Wayne's messages, dance or drama/skit specials), or they may operate independently from Farrington. The Farrington elements are provided to the satellites by DVD.

New Hope also has a Midweek service on Wednesday nights at its Sand Island location. The service supplements the weekend services with an "extended worship (30 – 40 minutes), journeys deep into scripture, and special time set aside for prayer and healing."[3]

Messages from previous services can be viewed or listened to on New Hope's website free of charge. In addition, several TV stations on Oahu show hour-long, condensed versions of the services weekly. A DVD or audio CD of the messages can also be purchased through the website or at the weekend services.

Partnership with Farrington High School

Since 1996, New Hope has partnered with Farrington High School by not only renting its auditorium for its weekend services, but also by helping maintain the campus. According to Farrington's principal, the school was initially going to close its auditorium because it was run down and the school had no money to fix it. The church responded by installing air conditioning and a sound system, while volunteers painted the auditorium, gym and several classrooms. Volunteers also help perform custodial duties, such as clearing trash and mowing the lawns on campus.[4]

History of New Hope and New Hope International

Pastor Wayne Cordeiro and his wife Anna started a church in the Waiakea Villas, Hilo, Hawaii. It then moved to the Holo Women's Club and then to the Hilo Boy's and Girl's Club. In 1990, the "Gathering Place" was built and the church grew to 2000.

In September 1995, Cordeiro and his wife Anna moved to Honolulu, Hawaii to start New Hope. [5]

Since its inception, New Hope has grown to over 102 churches in the Pacific Rim and beyond, including Las Vegas, Seattle, Los Angeles, Montana, the Philippines, Japan, Myanmar and Australia. New Hope International is the leadership training and church planting arm of New Hope, of which Cordeiro is the director.[6]

New Hope has been described as "a local personification of the nationwide phenomenon of mega-churches and the mushrooming of evangelical and Pentecostal Christianity." However, according to Cordeiro, God told him not to build a big church, but build big people instead.[7]

New Hope Christian College is affiliated with the church and is located in Eugene, OR.

Words of New Hope

Words of New Hope[8] is a radio show featuring Pastor Wayne's messages. The show, which includes dance, dramas and music from the services, can be heard on various radio stations throughout the U.S. A list of stations and times can be found here.
