Design and development
In the mid-1980s, Omsk Engine-Building Design Bureau started the development of a light 650 hp TV-O-100 engine specifically for the Mi-44. This showed that the replacement engine will increase the take-off mass up to 1800 kg capacity and a maximum speed of up to 260 km/h. Studies conducted by OKB Mil in 1986 to 1987, have concluded that the replacement of the original M-14V26 piston engine of the Mi-34 for the TV-O-100 gas turbine engine would require changing the airframe. A mockup with a new airframe was then built. The fuel tank was relocated in the compartment under the gearbox, instead of under the floor like its predecessor and the stabilizer was moved to the keel beam at the tail.
Early customers of the aircraft demanded that the aircraft be equipped with a twin power plant of about 400 hp. The most acceptable draft was the TVlD-450 engine. This would generally make the aircraft more agile in flight. So, in 1988, MVZ Mil proposed a draft Mi-44 with two 450 hp TVlD-450 engines. The design has undergone some minor changes compared with the prototype. So far, the engine fit-up is still being disputed and the project is still underway.
