List of British Railways shed codes

All British Railways steam locomotives were allocated to a particular motive power depot, usually known as a "shed". Each shed had a shed code which was displayed on an oval plate attached to the smokebox door of each locomotive allocated to that shed. British Railways allocated codes to steam locomotive depots in 1949,and this article lists the shed codes as they were in 1956, unless otherwise stated. After the end of Steam in 1968 depots were allocated a two-letter code.
