Contents
History
Chesterfield Day School was the first Montessori school in the St. Louis area.[2] It was first located at Craig and Olive Boulevard in Creve Coeur, and moved in 1974 to its current location at 1100 White Road in Chesterfield, which was formerly Barat Hall.
In 1993 Chesterfield Day School bought an adjoining three acre property and house and renovated it into a Montessori-based center for a pre-school program, calling it the "Little House."
Academics
From toddler to 1st grade Chesterfield Day School emphasizes a Montessori approach. In the classroom, children learn through exploring five basic areas: practical life, sensorial, language, math, and cultural studies.[3]
In the elementary grades, children continue to use Montessori materials as needed as they begin the journey from the concrete to the abstract.[4] Grades 2 and 3 are co-taught with one Montessorian and one traditional teacher. From 4th through 6th grade the classes are taught with traditional educational philosophies.
In addition to Montessori classrooms, students learn from specialist teachers for Spanish, physical education, art, music, library science, and technology.
The school promotes the development of initiative, independence, responsibility, curiosity, cooperation, and respect for self and others.[5]
Demographics
Approximately two-hundred students make up the student body of Chesterfield Day School, approximately 50% of which is male and 50% is female.[1] Minority populations consist of 33% of the student body[1], 19% of which speak a second language at home.
Matriculation
Chesterfield Day School students typically continue their education at independent schools, and the highest matriculation is among John Burroughs School, Whitfield School, Saint Louis Priory School, Villa Duchesne, Westminster Christian Academy and Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School.[6]
Alumni have attended colleges and universities such as Columbia University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Saint Louis University, and Washington University in St. Louis.
