nautical mile s (4 km) east of Līhuokinae, on the southeast coast of the island of Kauaokinai inKauai County , Hawaiokinai,United States .The airport does not serve as a hub for any airline. Numerous inter-island flights are available daily. During the 1970s United Airlines used DC-8-71's between Los Angeles and Lihue.
United Airlines has nonstop daily service to the mainland cities ofSan Francisco andLos Angeles , and weekly nonstop service toDenver .American Airlines also offers nonstop daily service toLos Angeles ; and recentlyUS Airways began offering nonstop service toPhoenix, Arizona .Alaska Airlines has also announced a new service toSeattle which began in October 2007. The airport's runway can handle planes up to and including the size of aDC-10 . Theairport is mostly un-walled, and the check in is completely outside.The airport is the primary gateway to Kauai for visitors (especially tourists), and has several rental car facilities.
