History
As early as 4000 BC there were nomads in this area. An important archaeological discovery was made at Burgumer Mar. This discovery is known as the Leien-Warten Kompleks. Mammoth tooth and gold rings were also found around Eastermar. They are in the Regional Museum at Burgum. The first farmers settled on the higher grounds east of the Burgumer Mar. The first stone church was built on the site in 1200. This site is now the cemetery. The community must be several centuries older than the church. In the Middle Ages there were already several farms around the church and to the north and south of It Heechsân.
Between 1500 and 1750 there was widespread peat extracted, which changed the area considerably. After 1750 farming resumed.
The lake De Leien originated from the peat extraction. A map from 1605 clearly shows that today's It Heechsân was formerly called Eastermar. The map shows that the Burgumer Mar (created during the Ice Age) was already there, but De Leien did not exist at that time.
Between Burgumer Mar and De Leien, on a crossing point between road and water (De Lits) a hamlet of peat workers arise called de Wâl. This was a place of shipping, trade and craft and became the main centre in this area. After the peat, the old core of It Heechsân keep stabbing in the development. Therefore, the center of the village now became Eastermar and the original church on it Heechsân.
