Although the neighboring area around
Binghamton was relatively unsettled in the early 1820s, the creation of theChenango Canal from Binghamton to Utica helped spur economic activity. Entrepreneur David Crocker purchased 900 acres of land, which now includes Hillcrest, Port Crane and parts of Chenango Bridge. In1825 , he chose to build his house, The Crocker Mansion, in the heart of present day Hillcrest and started the residential community.Places of Interest
