In astrology, a derivative house describes the affairs of a house as they relate to another individual. Each house in the horoscope as a specific rulership, such as the second house relating to the native's money. Every house in the horoscope also relates to a specific person known to the native, such as the fourth house referring to a parent. Therefore, if each house refers to a person known to the native and each house governs a specific area of the house, the derivative house governs the specific area of a person known to the querent.

Some house rulerships are as follows:

  • The first house relates to the native's appearance, behavior, and personality.
  • The second house relates to the native's money, property and finances.
  • The third house relates to the native's primary education, neighborhood and local surroundings.
  • The fourth house relates to the native's home life, security and the end of his life.
  • The fifth house relates to the native's holidays and that which he enjoys.
  • The sixth house relates to the native's duties, responsibilities, work, servitude and that which he is obliged to do.
  • The seventh house relates to the native's personal relationships and partnerships.
  • The eighth house relates to the native's sex life, the money he receives from his partner, taxes, and death.
  • The ninth house relates to the native's higher education, his religious beliefs, long distance travel, and his ability to expand his level of awareness.
  • The tenth house relates to the native's career, profession, and the image he would like to present to the world.
  • The eleventh house relates to the native's goals, desires, and dreams.
  • The twelfth house relates to the native's troubles from this or past lives, his secret enemies, and large institutions.

The people found in each house of the horoscope are as follows:

  • The first house is the querent.
  • The second house is someone who has control over the native's money or possessions, such as a bank manager or even a boss.
  • The third house relates to a neighbor, a school friend, or a sibling.
  • The fourth house relates to a family member, and quite often is the mother.
  • The fifth house relates to someone who the native loves, is attracted to, or a pet.
  • The sixth house relates to a colleague.
  • The seventh house relates to a partner, mate, close friend, or open enemy.
  • The eighth house is a tax man, a funeral director, someone who the native sees only for sex, or someone who stirs up in the native extreme emotions.
  • The ninth house refers to a theologian, a teacher, a mentor, someone the native met while traveling, or someone who helps the native expand his level of awareness of this world.
  • The tenth house refers to an employer, an authority figure, a politician, a parent, or someone who has the ability to influence the native's standing in the world.
  • The eleventh house refers to the native's friends and associates.
  • The twelfth house refers to hospital workers, prison workers, or the native's secret enemies.

Once the house governings and the people in the horoscope are known, it is only a relatively easy process to determine the Derivative house governships. As an example, the native's marital partner would be seen as the seventh house of the native's horoscope:

  • The seventh house is the native's partner's first house and deals this his self.
  • The eighth house is the native's partner's second house and relates to his partner's money.
  • The ninth house is the native's partner's third house and relates to his partner's neighborhood.
  • The tenth house is the native's partner's fourth house and relates to his partner's home life.
  • The eleventh house is the native's partner's fifth house and relates to that which is partner loves.
  • The twelfth house is the native's partner's sixth house and relates to his partner's work environment.
  • The first house is the native's partner's mate and should theoretically relate to the native.
  • The second house is the native's partner's eighth house and relates to that which the native gives his partner.
  • The third house is the native's partner's ninth house and relates to the partner's long distance travels.
  • The fourth house is the native's partner's tenth house and relates to the partner's career.
  • The fifth house is the native's partner's eleventh house and relates to the partner's friends.
  • The sixth house relates to the native's partner's twelfth house and relates to the partner's troubles.
