University Heights is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It borders Beachwood to the east, Cleveland Heights to the west, South Euclid to the north and Shaker Heights to the south. The population was 14,146 at the 2000 census. University Heights is nicknamed the "City of Beautiful Homes"

History

Originally part of Warrensville Township, Ohio, University Heights was incorporated as Idlewood Village in 1908. It adopted its present name in 1925 when John Carroll University moved to the Heights area. With the attraction of the college, University Heights quickly grew and by 1940 became a city.

Geography

University Heights is located at coor dms|41|29|42|N|81|32|13|W|city (41.495019, -81.536864)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km²), all of it land.

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 14,146 people, 5,163 households, and 3,319 families residing in the city. The population density was 7,713.6 people per square mile (2,984.6/km²). There were 5,350 housing units at an average density of 2,917.3/sq mi (1,128.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 75.43% White, 20.61% African American, 0.10% Native American, 1.70% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.56% of the population. Ancestries include German (16.1%), Irish (15.8%), Italian (10.4%), Polish (8.6%), Russian (6.2%), and English (5.5%).

There were 5,163 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.9% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the city the population was spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 18.9% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $61,635, and the median income for a family was $75,424. Males had a median income of $50,034 versus $39,694 for females. The per capita income for the city was $26,949. About 2.1% of families and 5.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.8% of those under age 18 and 5.6% of those age 65 or over.
