Beachwood is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland. The population was 12,186 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Beachwood is located at coor dms|41|28|56|N|81|30|14|W|city (41.482226, -81.504001).GR|1

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.7 km²), of which, 5.3 square miles (50.3 km²) of it is land and 0.19% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of July 2000:GR|2 11,535 (-5.3% change), 5,074 households, and 3,181 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,307.5 people per square mile (891.1/km²). There were 5,447 housing units at an average density of 1,031.4/sq mi (398.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 86.50% White, 9.08% African American, 0.08% Native American, 3.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.78% of the population. Beachwood has a plurality of residents who report being of Russian ancestry, with 17% of residents so reporting, the only ancestry reported by over 10% of Beachwood residents. There were 5,074 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city, the population was spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 3.0% from 18 to 24, 17.2% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 35.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 52 years. For every 100 females there were 78.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 71.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $65,406, and the median income for a family was $86,632. Males had a median income of $71,829 versus $35,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $40,509. 4.3% of the population and 2.5% of families were below the poverty line. 4.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

Education

The Beachwood education system is a Blue Ribbon awarded school. Beachwood is ranked amongst the top fifty schools in Ohio. Beachwood schools have the advantages of a large tax base and a high percentage of private school students (both religious schools and private academies.) The high school is constantly being renovated and added to, and recently an addition was made to the science wing. The classes offered at Beachwood range from robotics to AP Physics and beyond. The many clubs found at BHS are Science Olympiad, Academic Challenge, JCWA (Junior Council of World Affairs), Ecology Club, Israeli Culture Club, Amnesty International, Spanish Club, Frisbee Club, etc. The sports offered at the High School include football, soccer, cross country, tennis, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, swimming, diving, track, baseball and lacrosse. The school excels in tennis, wrestling, swimming and track with individual athletes advancing to the state championships. They also have up-and-coming basketball and football programs. Beachwood Middle School was recently rebuilt in 2004. All middle school students have their own Apple Computer laptops.
