George Landis Arboretum

George Landis Arboretum

The George Landis Arboretum consists of 80 ha (200 acres), 16 ha (40 acres) of which are devoted to the collections and gardens overlooking the Schoharie Valley near Esperance, New York, USA. It contains approximately 2,000 labeled specimens, with plantings of trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennials from around the world. The other areas consist of natural areas, woodlands and open fields, with 13 km (8 miles) of trails. The Arboretum is open free to the public, from dawn to dusk every day of the year.

History

Today's Arboretum dates back to 1928, when Fred Lape started planting trees in collaboration with plant collector George Landis. They collected plants from the wild, and by seed exchange with other nurseries, arboreta, and botanical gardens. Lape's propagation gave rise to a number of widely known cultivars including "Rhododendron" x 'Esperance', "Syringa vulgaris" 'Schoharie' (lilac), "Chaenomeles speciosa" 'George Landis' (quince), and some unnamed cultivars of "Malus pumila" var. "niedzwetzkyana" (crabapples). The 5000 sheet Baim Herbarium joined the Arboretum in 1990, with collections from the Adirondacks, northeastern and southeastern American states, and the South Pacific. It includes an almost complete flora of Schenectady County.

Collection

Landis collections include: beeches, "Buckleya distichophylla", clematis, crab apples, firs, lilacs, oaks (14 species), pines, rhododendrons and azaleas, spruce, and dwarf conifers. The fir ("Abies") collection is one of the most complete groupings of mature firs in the east, with sixteen species.
