The population was 18,037 at the 2007 census. Once Copiague was a thriving Italian community. Many years ago a part of Copiague was named after Marconi. The ethnic makeup of the hamlet is quite diverse, making Copiague a rich cultural nexus. North Amityville is on one of Copiague's borders and uses Copiague Schools.
Copiague is an unincorporated place within the Town of Babylon.
Geography
Copiague is located at 40°40′29″N 73°23′36″W / 40.67472°N 73.39333°W (40.674700, -73.393235).[1] It is approximately 70 miles west of Montauk Point, 35 miles east of New York City. Copiague is bordered by Lindenhurst, Amityville, Copiague Harbor, and the Great South Bay.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.7 square miles (9.6 km2), of which, 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) of it (13.32%) is water.
Demographics
With a relatively large Polish-American population, Copiague's population also consists of a large number of Hispanic-American residents. In recent years, the Danish population of Copiague has risen greatly as well.
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 18,037 people, 5,654 households, and 5,342 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,871.4 per square mile (2,653.3/km²). There were 7,415 housing units at an average density of 2,324.2/sq mi (897.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 80.00% White, 3.00% African American, 0.19% Native American, 9.20% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 8.48% from other races, and 3.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.00% of the population.
There were 5,654 households out of which 32.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 12.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.42.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.4 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $28,906, and the median income for a family was $45,369. Males had a median income of $70,563 versus $50,833 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $102,557. About 2.0% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.5% of those under age 18 and 2.5% of those age 65 or over.
South of Merrick Road (or Montauk Highway) lies Copiague Harbor.
