Beginning on its northern border and proceeding clockwise, the Hamlet of East Garden City in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Carle Place and the Village of Westbury in the Town of North Hempstead (the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of East Meadow; on the south by the Hamlet of Uniondale and the Village of Hempstead; and, on the west by the Village of Hempstead and the Village of Garden City.
East Garden City is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name as part of their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of East Garden City have either a "Garden City, NY 11530", a "Westbury, NY 11590", a "Uniondale, NY 11553" or a "Hempstead, NY 11550" mailing address.

As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 979 people, 275 households, and 243 families residing in the CDP. Thepopulation density was 322.9 per square mile (124.8/km²). There were 295 housing units at an average density of 97.3/sq mi (37.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 38.30% White, 54.14% African American, 0.10% Native American, 1.23% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 2.15% from other races, and 3.98% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.38% of the population.There were 275 households out of which 47.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.3% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 11.3% were non-families. 10.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.52 and the average family size was 3.69.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 31.4% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 37.5% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $62,083, and the median income for a family was $70,048. Males had a median income of $46,250 versus $31,029 for females. The
per capita income for the CDP was $22,099. About 5.3% of families and 7.8% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 13.5% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.References
