Courthouse in Springer is now a visitor center andmuseum . It was built for $9,800 in the early1880s . It has had multiple uses over the years, including the site of the Raton Reform School for Boys (1910-1917). It has also been alibrary , the Springer town hall, and ajail . Outside the courthouse museum is a tall monument to theTen Commandments . There is also a marker honoringLance Corporal Chad Robert Hildebrandt (October 12 ,1983 —October 17 ,2005 ), the first casualty in theIraq War from Springer. As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,285 people, 520 households, and 372 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 876.6 people per square mile (337.5/km²). There were 605 housing units at an average density of 412.7/sq mi (158.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 79.46% White, 1.09% Native American, 14.94% from other races, and 4.51% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 69.96% of the population.There were 520 households out of which 33.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the town the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $27,850, and the median income for a family was $34,563. Males had a median income of $24,479 versus $19,000 for females. The
