Brooklawn is a Borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 2,354.

Brooklawn was incorporated as a borough on March 11, 1924, from portions of the now-defunct Centre Township, based on the results of a referendum held on April 5, 1924. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), of which, 0.5 square miles (1.2 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (9.62%) is water.

Brooklawn borders Bellmawr and Gloucester City. Brooklawn also borders Gloucester County.

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,354 people, 961 households, and 600 families residing in the borough. The population density was 5,003.4 people per square mile (1,933.8/km²). There were 1,025 housing units at an average density of 2,178.6/sq mi (842.0/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 90.27% White, 4.29% African American, 0.08% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 2.38% from other races, and 1.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.72% of the population.

There were 961 households out of which 32.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.8% were married couples living together, 16.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the borough the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 32.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.0 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $39,600, and the median income for a family was $47,891. Males had a median income of $36,190 versus $26,591 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $18,295. About 6.1% of families and 7.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.3% of those under age 18 and 4.0% of those age 65 or over.

Government

Local representation

Brooklawn is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The government consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprising six council members, with all positions elected at large. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. As of 2008, the Mayor of the Borough of Brooklawn is John Soubasis. The Brooklawn Public School District serves public school students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade at Alice Costello School.
