Career
Club
Bennett has played with Lismore from a young age. Like his compatriot, Dan Shanahan, Bennett has won Waterford county championships at all underage levels from U-12 right up to U-21. Bennett however is yet to win the Waterford Senior Hurling Championship having lost county finals in 1996 and 2001.
Collegic
Bennett has also played with both UCC and WIT at collegic level. He has had a reasonably successful spell at both, winning the Fitzgibbon Cup with UCC in 1996, 1997 and 1998[4] and with WIT in 1999.
Inter-county
Bennett has played with the Waterford Senior Hurling Team since making his debut against Limerick in 1997. Right up to 2005, Bennett was a regular starter in midfield for Waterford but was mainly a squad member from 2006 onwards. With Waterford, Bennett won three Munster Senior Hurling Championships and one National Hurling League. Bennett's last game for Waterford came in the 2008 All-Ireland Hurling Final, with Bennett coming on as a substitute in the 64th minutes.[5] Bennett's last game would turn out to be a major disappointment with Waterford being resoundly beat by Kilkenny in the final.[6]
Since the All-Ireland final, Bennett has question the tactics of Waterford manager, Davy Fitzgerald. In an interview with the Irish Sunday Times, Bennett questioned Fitzgerald's aggressive tactics. He stated ""It was mind-blowing. In eight or nine years did you ever see Eoin Murphy hitting someone before a ball was thrown in - or Declan Prendergast?"[7]
