Playing career

Club

Prendergast plays his club hurling and football with his local Ardmore club.[citation needed] He featured on the Ardmore team that lost the 2007 Waterford senior football final against Ballinacourty.[citation needed]

Inter-county

Prendergast made his senior championship debut for Waterford in 2003 at a time when the county's hurling fortunes were on the way up.[citation needed] The following year he won his first Munster medal[citation needed] following a defeat of Cork in what has been described as the greatest Munster final of all-time.[citation needed] Unfortunately, Waterford were later defeated in the All-Ireland semi-final. The following two years brought little success for Prendergast and Waterford.[citation needed] In 2005 and 2006 they reached the All-Ireland knock-out series, however, they were beaten on both occasions by old rivals Cork.

In 2007 Prendergast won a National Hurling League medal following a victory over Kilkenny in the final.[citation needed] It was Waterford's first national title since 1963. He later collected a second Munster title following a win over Limerick. In the subsequent all-Ireland series, Waterford overcame Cork in a replay before losing to Limerick in the all-Ireland semi-final, the team's fifth such defeat in ten years.

Prendergast played in his first All-Ireland final in 2008,[citation needed] when Waterford, having been beaten by Clare in the Munster championship, overcame Antrim, Offaly, Wexford and Tipperary to qualify to meet Kilkenny in the county's first Liam McCarthy Cup decider since 1963. It was a disappointing day for the Déise, however, as Kilkenny triumphed by 23 points.[1]
