Club

Fives plays his club hurling with Tourin in the county intermediate championship.

Inter-county

Fives first played for Waterford as a member of the county's minor team in 2009. It was a successful year for the Decies as they qualified for the Munster final. Tipperary provided the opposition, however, it was Fives's side who claimed the Munster title by 0-18 to 1-13.[2] Waterford's run of success came to an end in the All-Ireland semi-final with a comprehensive defeat by Galway.

Fives was still eligible for the minor grade in 2010. Waterford qualified for a second consecutive Munster decider with Clare providing the opposition. A 1-16 to 1-11 defeat saw Fives end up on the losing side.[3]

By 2011 Fives had joined both the Waterford under-21 and senior teams. He made his senior debut at corner-back in the first round of the National Hurling League against Dublin and retained his position on the starting fifteen for the championship.
