Mario Clash (マリオクラッシュ Mario Kurasshu?) is a game produced by Nintendo in 1995 for the Virtual Boy. It is the first stereoscopic 3D Mario game. It is heavily based on the original Mario Bros.. Mario Clash did not use polygons like Super Mario 64 did. Instead, it uses 2D sprites.

Gameplay

The objective of the game is to knock all the enemies in a particular level off ledges. This is accomplished by hitting them using Koopa shells, of which there are always two—if one shell is knocked into a pit, another appears to take its place. The majority of Mario's enemies need to be hit on the side (i.e. with a shell thrown from the background while the enemies are in the foreground or vice versa). The player can choose to begin from any of the first forty stages.

Reception

The game has mixed reception, with many complaints stating the game was too long. Screwattack named it the second worst Mario game of all time.[2], while others were kinder, like The Video Game Critic, who gave it an A and called it a "must have for Virtual Boy owners."[3]

Other appearances

Game mechanics of Mario Clash were also used as a microgame in WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames! for the Game Boy Advance and WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Games! for the Gamecube. Featured as one of 9-Volt's microgames, the object was to knock either a Spike Top, Boo, or Paragoomba off the middle ledge in the foreground with a Koopa shell in the allotted time limit.
