Bangor Charter Township is a charter township of Bay County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The township's population was 15,547 as of the 2000 census and is included in the Bay City Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 21.9 square miles (57 km²), of which, 13.9 square miles (36 km²) of it is land and 8.0 square miles (21 km²) of it (36.58%) is water.

As of the census^[1] of 2000, there were 15,547 people, 6,285 households, and 4,386 families residing in the township. The population density was 1,119.4 per square mile (432.2/km²). There were 6,563 housing units at an average density of 472.6 per square mile (182.4/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.48% White, 0.62% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.66% of the population.

There were 6,285 households out of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the township the population was spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $42,358, and the median income for a family was $52,574. Males had a median income of $40,876 versus $24,776 for females. The per capita income for the township was $21,723. About 4.7% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.8% of those under age 18 and 7.2% of those age 65 or over.
